Orange Fair: when winter tastes like sunshine

There are days when winter doesn’t feel heavy. Days when the cold softens and the sun lands exactly where it should. In the Lecrín Valley, that feeling usually arrives with the Orange Fair in Melegís.
This isn’t a loud festival or a big production. It’s something quieter. A small village opening up, a few tables set outside, hands offering what they’ve made at home or grown in the fields. And the smell… fresh orange peel in the air, everywhere.
Here, oranges aren’t decoration. They’re the reason, the tradition, the memory.
You walk a bit, someone hands you a juice. You take a sip and suddenly it makes sense. It doesn’t taste like anything from a supermarket. It’s sharper, sweeter, more alive. As if it still remembers the tree.
Between stalls you’ll find homemade jams, cakes, honey, simple crafts. Nothing overworked, nothing forced. Just things made with care. And that changes everything. People aren’t rushing. No one is trying too hard. Conversations stretch, people linger.
And somewhere in all that, there’s a feeling that’s hard to name:like things, for a moment, are exactly where they should be.
There’s music, kids running around, dogs lying in the sun, long conversations going nowhere in particular. A kind of pause that no one announces.
If you come, don’t plan too much. Just arrive, wander, sit down when you feel like it. Maybe later head towards Nigüelas, drift a little further through the valley, let the day unfold on its own.
And when your body starts asking for something more than juice…that’s when the day quietly finds its perfect ending.
Just a few minutes away, surrounded by olive trees and calm, you’ll find Alquería de los Lentos. No rush there either. Cooking that follows the same rhythm as the fair: local ingredients, comforting dishes, and the kind of long lunch that slowly turns into an afternoon.
Because days like this aren’t meant to end quickly. They’re meant to stretch. To settle. To stay with you a little longer.
